Finding Our True Desire

Fishing seems simple. A rod, reel, and some type of bait.

When I was young, probably six or eight years old, my family went to a nearby river on a sunny afternoon. My brothers loved to fish. I wanted to learn, so I begged for someone to teach me.

This doesn’t look like fishing.

My brother told me to sling the fishing line with the jig as far as possible. Splash, I got it in the water. I was content with my success. Now, reel it in, he said. I was puzzled. Do it again, he said. I frowned. By the third throw, I was confused.

I had it all in my head. I had watched it on a few television shows and heard stories from Grandpa. Yeah, I had a good picture.

The images we hold in our minds can sometimes hinder our journey toward achieving our desires. It’s essential to recognize that real life unfolds unexpectedly, and that’s okay.

Trying New Things

The pictures in our heads can thwart our progress in getting what we want. Real life doesn’t turn out like we expect. It’s sometimes better to go for an emotional desire than an image. Or stay flexible with your thoughts. Try new things and experiences. Learn to be open-minded.

What are your preformed images of marriage? Can you define the relationship in feelings? Do you feel at ease with each other? Is the relationship lighthearted? What is the joy level?

Do the same with your money. There can be many ways of handling money: tight and secure or free and flowing, judgment and accountability. How do you want it to be? Recreate that in your mind and then in your life. It’s one step at a time. Change can happen if you wish.

We mislabel our desires.

My childhood memories of how you were supposed to fish didn’t match with the pictures in my mind. My confusion came because I wasn’t getting what I wanted, because “fishing” had a feeling to me that was peaceful and still. I had named it fishing.

I’ll try to break this down. We talk about marriage and a house when we want security. We need to know we are safe. Find what makes you happy, or what makes you feel safe?
