Yes, it’s a trendy catchword now: Trauma. What was once a term barely whispered about war veterans or victims of violence is now heard on podcasts and from church podiums. The phrases, trauma response or trigger reaction, have become an eye roll for the overuse.
For most Americans, we understand the difference between being a true trauma survivor and a person who is out for political gain. I only wish to encourage and support those who are looking for help. I hope you understand. I don’t take pain lightly. In all forms, it can be debilitating.

A GASH IN THE HEART
Trauma is the gash across your heart
It keeps you awake at night fretting
Trauma causes feelings, but not as we wish
We hurt
We long
We regret
Trauma is the death of a child
Or a best friend
Sometimes we carry the pain for years
Not knowing how to let go
Not wanting to release it for fear
Of losing the one connection we have left
Trauma is being left behind
Crippled by loneliness
Freedom being far scarier for some
Standing alone
Without borders
Sole responsibility
Trauma is a gash in the heart
A mighty chiseled force
Of opening
Painful opening
